About a month ago, I bought a brass ship's hourglass from one of my new favorite online shops, One Kings Lane.
I've become quite addicted to their hugely discounted designer homewares over the past few months; last week, I bought a beautiful gift box of Claus Porto soaps for just $19.
Anyway, back to that hourglass. I bought it because I had a sudden revelation on where it absolutely needed to hang in my house.
(Kitchen)
It's a thirty minute timer, which is exactly the length of one episode of "Phineas and Ferb", "Johnny Test" and the regrettably-named "Kick Buttowski." I'm not wholly parsimonious with my son watching television, but I'm hoping that having those sands of time slipping, slipping away right in front of him will make him consider what else he could be doing. Plus, I just like the way it looks up there, its delicate structure offering a gentle counterpoint to that black thing anchored to the wall (living with two males, I have reluctantly come to accept that sports and cartoons are considered as essential to life as air and water.)
In other news...
My friend Andrea over at C Magazine emailed me that One Kings Lane is holding their first Tastemaker Tag Sale this Saturday, April 10th, and seriously, the only break I'm taking from sewing this weekend is to be online when the sale begins. I was fortunate enough to meet the dashing Nathan Turner...

...during a party in Almont Yard recently and he told me that the chair I've had my eye on for about two years now...
(Flores chair designed by Nathan Turner)
..is going to be in the sale at a crazy reduced price. Be still, my heart.
Andrea also sent me a photo of this pair of Foo dogs which will be on sale for $109...
...and this incredible hand-painted lantern ($599) that would grace my entry foyer so nicely.
All the items were handpicked by Nathan, which is kind of cool, I think. If any of you buy anything, you'll let me know, won't you?

Phineas and Ferb I unfortunately know, but not yet Johnny Test and Kick Buttowski. We've come a long way from Johnny Quest, my fave.
Enjoying your blog, and the info about the tag sale and charming photo of Nathan.
You have no idea how I wish I could attend!!

First of all...I've been meaning to tell you that your wallpaper is beyond words stunning...love it! The TV, antlers and now the clock, make for the perfect mini- masculine man cave area, it's brilliant! I could say more but have to get on to the chair...love it!
We are moving into a house with a fireplace that two of these chairs would look amazing in front of. We have no furniture so it's either these...or the plastic white lawn chairs that have been in storage for 3 1/2 years!
Is it Saturday yet???
Forgive me...but I just realized that there might only be one chair for sale...could that possibly be??? If so Lisa...it's yours of course, first seen love wins all!
Okay...I think I'm done (haven't been this excited about furniture in a while!). xo
Tina: Thank you so much for stopping by and for your lovely, lovely comment on Diane's site. Really, it made my day! xxx
Karena: I promise to post photos!
24 Corners: Oh, I never get tired of that wallpaper. It's Timorous Beasties "Thistle." Your new house sounds wonderful -- if you have a hearth, you have a home, I think. And yes, those chairs would look incredible...maybe there will be two in the sale.... Good luck!
24Corners: No, no, go for it! I meant maybe there are two for you.
Ohhh no Lisa...*two years* of dreaming beats out 2 seconds of mad frenzy chair gushing! I felt so silly once I realized there was probably only going to be one...there will be other chairs, really (sanity is returning)! You are so thoughtful though!
My son 14, is an actor, he is also a rectangular screen addict, giving me the excuse he is studying his craft- with the Simpson's dubbed in French. I do not believe him(although he has done some voice overs). I like this tangible low-tech solution to TV time.
Thanks

There's that wallpaper again! Thank you for the information on it earlier this week. That's a great chair-we should all have our own special throne in which to monitor cartoons and baseball games. And that hour glass could also come in handy when we get carried away at the computer perusing a fabulous sale... I should look into that!
Time is on your side. I love a good hourglass.
I can see your son playing tricks with all that time.

the tag sale invite just landed in my inbox and I was headed over to see what it was all about when I took a quick detour here. So excited to see such lovely pieces up for sale! And that chair is truly fabulous. I would love to replace the purple massage chair that I've been forced to live with with that gorgeous orange thing!
I love your ship's hour glass and what a ingenious way to use it (being a mother of three devoted fans of Kick!) Definitely on my wish list as my family room has a nautical theme - brass, large sailboat painting, shells and the rest. Maybe the hourglass also comes in other time increments - 5 minutes (for clean up time or the "sitting in the quiet chair" time out), 10 minutes (for "we have ten minutes before the school bus comes") and 1 hour (for the "do anything you want because you deserve it!")!
NAthan Turner's aesthetic is great. Please view my post for other handpicked selections. Love One Kings Lane-Happy Shopping!

Lisa -
My boyfriend LOVES to watch television. He is a successful chemical engineer and is intensely busy most of the day, his unwinding is done in front of the tube.
Me, on the other hand, sits there watching with him (sometimes) thinking...what a waste, I could be doing something much better.
So your hourglass idea SHOUTS to my heart!
the time is now to start
Coming out of my lurk as I can totally relate. I am hopelessly addicted, in constant wait of the email updates, unreasonably excited about an internet sale, and an absolutely sore shopper as I missed out on some linen cocktail napkins that were only $18 for a set of 8. And now I want your timer to plop down near the television though I'm quite certain I've missed out on that, too...

Hi, I came over from Christian's. I'm fascinated by your work and your newest follower.
Lisa - Did you get the chair from the One King's Lane sale? It looks so you. A good book on the Ipad, a warm cup of tea and thee!
Pamela in Portland, OR
Lisa...I do hope the chair is yours! Please let us know....

Awesome pics! Thanks for the tip. I'm fast becoming addicted to One King's Lane - they have great taste, and most of the sales are for items really worth having, not just "decor stuff."
Hello Lisa - I happened upon your fabulous blog through Diane @ Style Saloniste & so happy I did. She did such a thorough and flattering post on you that was a great read. I look forward to following. One Kings Lane is magnificent. Gorgeous, not mass produced items, that are so unique and charming. When you wrap all that up with a just as charming price tag & one is in heaven. Great Sunday to you ~ Deborah
I love that hourglass. The sale is great. Thanks for the reminder.
Don't worry about the dashing Mr Turner. Look at that sublimely handsome labrador!
love the hourglass! hope you scored some good items at the sale.
