Salvaging Sunday

One recent Sunday morning, Piero, Luca and I were sitting around the breakfast table in a bit of a funk. It had been raining for days, the internet and cable TV were down and we were all feeling psychologically waterlogged. There didn't seem to be much in the way of enlivening conversation.

Luca: What are we doing today?
Me: Same as yesterday.
Luca: Yesterday was boring.
(Pause)
Piero: (to Luca) What do you want to do?
Luca: Have friends come over.
Me: Today's too busy.
Luca: What about tonight?
Me: Tonight? It's Sunday.
Piero: I have to work tomorrow.
Luca (to us) Now you're boring.

Talk about an instant game-changer. Piero and I looked at each other in horror. Had we become so stodgy and set in our ways that we couldn't make a last-minute plan to invite friends over for dinner?

Had the heady thrills of spontaneity vanished from our lives?

Were we fated to trudge forward into the future with some dreary prearranged itinerary clasped in our hands?

Umm, that would be no.

But it would have to be simple.
It would have to be fast.
And it would have to be fun.

Were we up to it?

Umm, that would be yes. Check out our night below:

Me, me!! Have me over for dinner next Sunday. Why should it matter that you don't really know me and that I live on the East coast...I'll help you get that kitchen clean before I leave...

This was superbly humorous. The webisode was exceptionally well put together. I must agree with Luca-rainy days can be a bit of a drag.

Life seems a bit less
animated when we are not connected electomncially to our virtual counter parts. Glad to see you found your way back.

Thank you for sharing.

You made that look so easy~ I just called friends to come to dinner tonight for chowder, scones and wine. Somehow I think these impromptu plans may be the very best. Off to start my chowder! Love this series.

What a lovely, wonderful, heart-warming video. When my kids were young we would have friends over, or be invited to their house, every Sunday. Because we did it so often, the expectations were low and always surpassed. A signature cocktail helped too, in our case, Sidecars. I still remember the light on the table as sun set in the summers. Those nights were one of the best part of my marriage, now done.

What a great evening you had and it took Luca to prod you out of "bring boring". We all are guilty of being boring and this is a good lesson

I want to come next week, along with bluehydrangea

Thanks for this beauitul post

Lisa, awesome post as always. Have long loved reading your posts, especially when it's about books. Today, I found this post on embroidered Penguin book covers (gasp!) and wanted to share it, in case you haven't seen it yet!

We've been waterlogged here in Seattle since fall Lisa...and according to my mother who lives nearish you...it's 'our' rain that you've been 'experencing'...truly sorry.
Your impromptu, anti-stodginess, doldrum eliminator dinner party couldn't have been more perfect, I'm thoroughly inspired.
Many thanks...

Last minute gatherings are the best! My favorite part about them is that instead of overly-thinking-planning things, they just take shape on their own. The fact that everyone was told to come over at the last minute also is an exciting factor to their otherwise "boring" evening. Great job!

I love your blog, I adored this video, and dare I say even though I don't know you I love you too!

When i was little, there was nothing better than when my parents threw dinners, although my mother's entailed preparations for DAYS and enough food to feed entire armies! We ate, ran around to our heart's content, and ate some more, then all helped with the cleanup after the guests left. Such sweet memories that Luca will cherish. Please keep the posts coming!

You make it look so easy and chic! I think we all need to be a little more spontaneous and what better season to do it in but spring... seems like my garden is bursting with spontaneity - every morning there is something new to gaze at - blooming helleborus, flowering forsythia and blooming daffodils!

Lisa, me thinks you have a lovely perspective on life. As does Luca !! I LOVE last minute plans. It looked a most charming, easy going evening. I love rainy days, inviting friends over, a deliciously simple meal, getting cosy, a game of checkers or cards. Hmmm...heaven. Totally loving A Bloomsbury Life webisodes.

I too have taken time off from blogging (and reading and posting on blogs as well.) But I couldn't resist telling you how happy I was to find you back. The videos are great. Your passion for homes and interior design eloquently comes through. I have had a love affair with houses my entire life. Reading your blog makes me want to shout "comrade!"

Hello:

We are new to the world of the blog but are delighted to have found you. We share your love of World of Interiors, essential reading in our view and never go to bed without the washing up done.....although often carried out by someone else to be truthful......

We have much enjoyed reading your posts and shall return [as Followers].

Loved the webisode! Often my children inspire me to be more spontaneous and I'm always happy with the results, especially when I have people over last minute. Such a great ending to a rainy day.
