A Peace of Green

It was just a blanket on the grass, that's all it was. Strewn with a few pillows for propping purposes, a stack of books and the latest World of Interiors

But to me, today, it was so much more. Yes, I know it's 2009 and I live in Hollywood, California, but when I crept out here after breakfast and laid my things down under our majestic pittisporum tree, visions of Edwardian lawn parties and fetes du champetres and pastoral scenes from a Trollope novel popped into my head. It was the reading material, it was the serene milieu and it was the mood I was in.

In my last post, I announced we were going to take a road trip up to Northern California. But after a cocktail the other night, The Divine Italian and I decided that it would be more restorative to stay put on our little patch of green.

And so today I lazed and I loafed and I read. And I listened intently to the birdsong and I sipped my coffee and I watched the dappled sunlight make patterns in the grass and I scooted over when Luca and Piero lay down beside me and I was grateful for earthly pleasures.

Just a blanket on the grass. That's all it was.

Nothing to do with your post--just putting this here.

I was wondering if you have found the Persephone Press blog called Persephone Post yet? You will like it, I think.

Also I was wondering if you are familiar with Mrs. Delany (Mary Granville Delany) who knew everyone who was anybody in 18th century London and Dublin and wrote about it all in letters, published first in the 19th c, to her sister and nieces. She was also a major craftswomen: embroidery and needlework; shellwork; decorating; and, most famously, nearly 1000 highly realistic paper collages of flowers, most of which are now in the British Museum. Her London house was on St. James Place (now gone) near Spencer House. Her memorial plaque is at St. James on Piccadilly--if you can get past the endless bazaar. There is going to be a Mrs. Delany exhibit at Yale this Fall which will then go to the Sir John Sloane Museum in London. Mrs. D was your kind of woman.

Sounds like pure bliss Lisa. I see Fig Leaf made an appearance, too.

C.T., SImply Mel and Style Court: THe best part was that it didn't cost a penny! :)

Linda: I am a Persephone addict (have made two pilgrimages to the store on Lambs Conduit Street all the way from LA), BUT...I am unfamiliar with Mrs. Delany! This is why I love having a blog. I learn so many things from people! She sounds absolutely fascinating. And I love Sir John Soane's Museum...Because of you, I may have to start looking into flights on BA! Thank you, thank you for your post.

Dear Ms. Giramonti,
I believe that you, too, are in the running. Thank you for the compliment. I've a good tailor and a better camera angle. Mrs. PvE is simply very, very elegant.

Have earthly delights in your own secret garden. The soil of home is always the closet place to heaven.

We have a hammock and often can be found out there, between the trees, blanket strewn hither, dog askew, piles of books and barefoot of course. I love this time of year when free things beckon our attention.
Looks like a peaceful oasis on your blanket.
Heavenly in fact.

Thank you for the reminder about Mrs. Delany - only last week I was reading comments by her - and mean to find what I can about her in London later this week. Other than that, very jealous about lawn as mine is nine green carpet tiles from Flor on my 11th floor balcony. Enjoy your days in the sun!

Home Before Dark: My landscaper is coming over Wednesday to discuss my plans for a secret garden, so your words are very apt! I've been reading a lot of Gertrude Jekyll and Vita Sackville-West for reference...

PVE: Love hammocks. Don't have one. Need. Desperately. Do you have a brand you recommend, oh stylish one?

Blue: You read Delany, I'll read Delany...and let's compare. And green Flor tiles on a balcony sound quite chic -- the view when you bask out there must be lovely!
